My appliance caused water damage, will my insurance company replace it?

Ever wondered if your insurance company is responsible for replacing your appliance that caused water damage? We get this question a lot at our firm. Let’s dive into it!

Water damage typically occurs out of pipe breaks & appliance failures. In Florida, the way most policies are written, the damages caused by the appliance may be covered, but the appliance itself will not be.

Let’s look at an example,

Mary is a homeowner with a standard homeowner’s policy. Mary has a dishwasher leak which caused extensive damage to her floors, kitchen cabinets & drywall.

The insurance company may approve coverage for the ensuing damages (flooring, kitchen & drywall) however, they will not pay Mary to buy a new dishwasher.

In the end, it all comes down to your policy. Insurance carriers typically have a standardized way of writing policies, but a careful review of your policy is key to determining what is owed to you by your insurance company & what is not.
